Category — Revenues thru Confederate States

$200.00 Red, Blue & Black, Second Issue, "Small Persian Rug" (R132). Rich colors, manuscript cancel and bold strike of blue "Wilkes Barre Coal & Iron Co. N.Y. Apr. 11, 1872" double-oval datestamp
VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL SOUND EXAMPLE OF ONE OF THE MOST COLORFUL STAMPS IN UNITED STATES PHILATELY. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE WITH THE BLUE HANDSTAMP CANCEL.
Both the Small and Large "Persian Rug" stamps were printed in sheets of one. Because of their size, the large number of perforations on each stamp, and the fact that they were used on documents which were frequently folded across the stamps, sound examples of the multicolored "Persian Rug" issues are extremely rare.
Only 446 of the small "Persian Rug" were issued. We have offered only five others with handstamp cancels in our sales since 1993 and our Rarities of the World sales since 1964, including three others with Wilkes Barre double ovals which were also used on this same date (two are sound). Of the two non-Wilkes Barre, one has a herringbone cancel and one has a light crease.
With 2004 P.F. certificate.

$500.00 Red Orange, Green & Black, Second Issue, "Large Persian Rug" (R133). Rich colors, clear "Consolidated Coal Co., Jany 1/72" manuscript cancel, completely sound
VERY FINE AND CHOICE. A RARE AND BEAUTIFUL SOUND EXAMPLE OF THE FAMOUS "LARGE PERSIAN RUG" STAMP, WHICH IS ONE OF THE MOST COLORFUL AND ELABORATELY ENGRAVED STAMPS IN ALL OF PHILATELY.
Only 210 were issued, and it is safe to say that most examples are faulty to some degree. A document exists from July 24, 1874, detailing the purchaser of each. Our census at https://siegelauctions.com/census/us/scott/R133 contains 87 examples.
Illustrated in Kingsley book (census no. 8-1). With 1990 P.F. certificate.

$5.00 Green & Black on Violet Paper, Proprietary (RB10a). Deep rich color, margins showing complete design elements all around, neat Feb. 1879 manuscript cancel, completely sound
FRESH AND VERY FINE. A RARE SOUND EXAMPLE OF THE $5.00 PROPRIETARY ISSUE ON VIOLET PAPER.
Examples of the $5.00 Proprietary Issue almost invariably have faults, due to the stamp's large size and the nature of its use. This example is the exception to the norm. The Kingsley book contains a table showing 2,109 stamps ordered and he records only 119 copies extant.
With 1966 P.F. certificate.

Each stamp shares framelines with the adjoining positions, so four-frameline copies are exceedingly rare.
