Category — 1851-56 Issue: 10c-12c (Scott 13-17)

10c Green, Ty. I (13). Original gum, h.r., three large margins, clear to just touched at bottom and clearly showing the design characteristics, deep rich color and detailed impression
FRESH AND VERY FINE. A RARE SOUND ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1855 10-CENT TYPE I, WHICH WAS FURNISHED ONLY BY THE BOTTOM ROW OF THE PLATE.
Type I stamps come from the bottom 20 positions of the plate. They are the only stamps to show the design complete at bottom. For some reason the sheet margin at bottom was often trimmed away, leaving a dearth of quality copies.
With 1960 P.F. certificate.

EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE AND DESIRABLE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1855 10-CENT TYPE I IN THE DARK GREEN SHADE.
Type I stamps come only from the bottom 20 positions of the plate and they are the only stamps to show the design complete at bottom. For some reason the sheet margin at bottom was often trimmed away, leaving a dearth of quality copies. This distinctive shade variety, with four large margins, is desirable.

10c Green, Ty. II-IV-II (14-16-14). Positions 2-4R1, horizontal strip of three, center stamp Type IV with recut at top, from the misplaced relief position showing breaks in lines above each "X", original gum, large margins all around, rich color, a tiny scrape at center of Type IV stamp is barely noticeable
EXTREMELY FINE. A PHENOMENAL 1855 10-CENT IMPERFORATE ORIGINAL-GUM STRIP OF THREE with combination OF TYPES II AND IV. THIS IS probably THE FINEST ORIGINAL-GUM MULTIPLE with a type iv stamp IN EXISTENCE.
The first 10c plate of 200 (left and right panes of 100) was laid down using a three-subject transfer roll with relief types A, B and C. The C Relief was used only for the bottom row (all Type I design). The A Relief (Type II design) was used to enter the entire second row, and the B Relief (Type III design) was used for the third row. This A/B alternating relief pattern was followed consistently for the fourth through ninth rows. The top row was entered with the A Relief, except for three positions: Positions 1 and 2 in the left pane, and Position 3 in the right pane. These “misplaced reliefs” are B Reliefs, and Positions 1L and 2L are Type III designs, while Position 3R was recut (Type IV).
Position 3R1, one of the three misplaced relief positions on the plate, is also one of eight recut (Type IV) positions and the only recut position on the entire right pane of the plate.
A review using Power Search found only two other unused multiples containing Scott 16. One is a strip of eight from Positions 71-78L1 with large part original gum. The other is a pair from Positions 53-54L1 with disturbed gum, stains and creases.
From our 1977 Rarities sale. With 1975 P.F. certificate that does not mention the tiny scrape in center stamp (but it is present in photo). Unlisted in Scott as a strip of three. Scott value $47,500 as a combination pair and single, but obviously of considerably greater value.

12c Black (17). Horizontal pair, intense deep shade, original gum, lightly hinged, large even margins all around
EXTREMELY FINE. A STUNNING LIGHTLY HINGED PAIR OF THE 12-CENT 1851 ISSUE IN A DEEP SHADE OF BLACK.
As multiples demonstrate, the spacing between stamps on the plate for the 12c 1851 Issue was very narrow. Sound original-gum examples with four margins are great rarities, and most have been cut from larger multiples.
With 2010 P.F. certificate as Black. Scott changed the main listing for No. 17 from Black to Gray Black around 2011-12 (with the two shades also swapping places in the sub-listings) — we have no idea why they made this change and frankly we did not even notice until writing up this lot — it has always been and remains Siegel's practice to call the 12c 1851 Issue Black. Scott now applies a 20% premium for Black as a single, and does not price a pair. Scott value here is for a normal pair now listed as Gray Black.

12c Black (17). Positions 61-63L1, horizontal strip of three, right stamp (63L) with double transfer and lower left corner recut, original gum, large margins to just in at left and bottom left, left and right stamps with creases, left stamp small internal tear, right stamps light toning
FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE ORIGINAL-GUM STRIP OF THREE OF THE 12-CENT 1851 ISSUE, WITH THE RIGHT STAMP FROM POSITION 63L1, SHOWING A PROMINENT DOUBLE TRANSFER AND RECUT LOWER LEFT CORNER.
With 1969 and 2008 P.F. certificates. Scott value $24,000 as pair and single (the double transfer and recut lower left corner varieties are listed separately in Scott).

12c Greenish Black, Reprint, Imperforate on Stamp Paper (44 var or 44P5). Horizontal strip of three, unused (no gum), large margins all around, intense shade and impression
EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE UNUSED STRIP OF THREE OF THE 12-CENT 1875 REPRINT IMPERFORATE ON STAMP PAPER WITH large MARGINS AND IN SOUND CONDITION.
The 12c Reprint plate was made in 1875 to produce stamps for the Special Printing program. The subjects are spaced wider apart and there are other notable differences in the entries. The 12c Reprint stamps sold to the public were perforated (Scott 44), but imperforate stamps on stamp paper were also released. These are now classified as Scott 44P5. This strip obviously comes from the Reprint plate and was sold as such in our 1989 Rarities sale, but The Philatelic Foundation disagreed with us back then and certified the strip as "Scott 17, the normal imperforate issue." In a free country, anyone has the right to be wrong. To set the record straight, we are offering this strip as the 12c Reprint, Scott 44, imperforate on stamp paper, and we placed it next to the Scott 17 strip so that a comparison can be easily made. This is the largest and finest recorded multiple we record.
With 1989 P.F. certificate as Scott 17. The Scott footnote after 1857 Reprints states "An imperforate strip of 3 of No. 44 also is recorded" — that is the strip offered here.
