3c Orange Brown, Ty. I (10). Plate 1, original gum, h.r., three ample to large margins, clear to just in at top, intense color on bright paper, light diagonal crease at lower left not noted on certificate
FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 3-CENT TYPE I ORANGE BROWN, SCOTT 10. WE HAVE OFFERED ONLY ONE OTHER SINGLE WITH ORIGINAL GUM SINCE 2010.
Starting with the 2008 U.S. Specialized, the Scott Catalogue began to differentiate between the 1851 Imperforate 3c types, based on the presence or lack of recut inner lines. The lack of recut inner lines means the stamp is Type I, Scott 10 or 11. The presence of recut inner lines means the stamp is Type II, Scott 10A and 11A. Type I comes from only two plates — 1E and 1i, while Type II comes from five plates. The Scott values are not drastically different but the vast majority of the original-gum examples we have sold in the past 30 years are Type II. We have offered only one single with original gum and two stamps in a strip of four since 2006.
With 1974 P.F. certificate.

EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF THE BEST-CENTERED OF THE 33 RECORDED EXAMPLES FROM THE "SAMPLE A" SHEET WITH THE HADLEY 11-GAUGE CHICAGO PERFORATIONS.
This stamp was originally part of the Chase block of 21 (illustrated in his book on p. 176) and subsequently part of a pair. The other stamp in the pair (Position 97R2L) was last offered in Sale 1221 in 2020 (also ex "Lake Shore"). A total of 33 "Sample A" Chicago Perf stamps are recorded, including a block of nine, two blocks of six (see Sale 996, lot 3177) and a block of four. There are four contiguous stamps from the Chase piece that have not been accounted for and may or may not still exist as a block. The examples from the Sample "A" sheet are the only known unused 3c stamps with Chicago perforations. There are no known unused examples with the gauge 121/2 perforations.
Ex Wagshal. With 1979 P.F. certificate as a pair, stating genuine but declining opinion as to its origin from the Chase block. The pair is clearly from the bottom row of the Chase Sample "A" block.

5c Red Brown (12). C Relief, original gum, full to large margins all around, crisp shade and sharp impression on fresh paper
EXTREMELY FINE. A RARE SOUND ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT 1856 ISSUE WITH LARGE MARGINS.
The 5c stamp was issued in 1856, five years after the 1c, 3c and 12c values and one year after the 10c were issued. It was typically used to pay the 5c shore-to-ship rate for mail sent overseas and also in multiples for the 10c transcontinental or 15c U.S.-French treaty rates.
With the exception of some rare types of the 1c and 10c, such as Scott Nos. 5 and 16, the 5c stamp is the most challenging denomination to obtain with four margins in sound original-gum condition. The spacing between stamps was very narrow, leaving little margin for error when separating the stamps, which explains why so few examples are known with four margins.
Ex Caspary and Hetherington. With 1957 P.F. certificate (describes the previously hinged gum as "part o.g."). With 2026 P.F. certificate stating "o.g., previously hinged".
