$1.00 Deep Brown (518b). Original gum, rich color in the distinct Deep Brown shade, well-centered with nicely balanced margins
VERY FINE AND CHOICE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE $1.00 1917 ISSUE IN THE DEEP BROWN COLOR.
According to Johl, a small number of stamps were printed in this distinctive shade early in the issue of the 1917 $1.00 stamp. During the course of the six years that the stamp was issued, all other printings were made in the normal shade. Centered examples such as the stamp offered here are true condition rarities. The P.S.E. Population Report statistics bear this out. Only 13 unused examples have been submitted for grading and only one original-gum example grades higher than the VF 80 offered here (Mint N.H., XF 90).
With 1979, 1998 P.F. and 2006 P.S.E. certificates (OGph, VF 80). Seven hinged examples share this grade, which is the highest awarded in this gum condition, with only the aforementioned Mint N.H. XF 90 graded higher. SCV $2,000.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM SHEET-MARGIN EXAMPLE OF THE SCARCE 2-CENT TYPE VII IMPERFORATE ISSUE, SCOTT 534B, GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E.

Ex Dr. Blumenkopf and Dr. Killien. With 1992 P.F. certificate for a block of four. With 2006 P.S.E. certificate as this single (OGph, Superb 98 Jumbo). This is the highest grade awarded by P.S.E. to a Scott 537a in any condition. In fact, no other examples, unused or used come even close to this grade. The next highest are hinged and Mint N.H. examples at XF 90. This is a true condition rarity of an already rare stamp.

Mint N.H., exceptional centering for this challenging issue with wide and balanced margins, rich color, Extremely Fine Gem, with 2006 P.S.E. certificate (Superb 98), this is the the highest grade awarded and it is shared by only five others, the last 98 we offered in 2025 realized $1,500 hammer and the one before that in 2022 realized $1,700 hammer — so we suspect the SMQ value is out of date
