EXTREMELY FINE GEM. AN EXCEPTIONALLY BEAUTIFUL UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE 90-CENT 1861 ISSUE, SCOTT 72, GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E.
With 1989, 2005 P.F. and 2005 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95). This stamp is perfect for someone who values centering above all else — the same grade with gum has an SMQ value of $25,000.

90c Pale Blue (72a). Original gum, lovely color in the true Pale Blue shade, unusually choice centering
EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS IS WITHOUT QUESTION THE FINEST ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 90-CENT 1861 ISSUE IN THE PALE BLUE SHADE. THIS IS ONE OF ONLY TWO SOUND ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLES CERTIFIED AS GENUINE BY THE PHILATELIC FOUNDATION.
This shade is extremely challenging to obtain in sound unused condition. In all of our auctions from 1994 onwards, we have offered only one with original gum and it was reperfed at top. The online records of The Philatelic Foundation contain only four with any gum (one is part original gum with a fault) and only two are sound. The other sound example is centered to the left.
With 2003 P.F. certificate. Scott does not even assign a premium for this shade, despite its great rarity. SCV $3,250 for ordinary shade.

90c Dark Blue (72b). Unused, regummed over tiny thins, intense shade in the true Dark Blue color
FINE APPEARANCE. THE 90-CENT DARK BLUE IS EXTREMELY RARE IN UNUSED CONDITION. THE PHILATELIC FOUNDATION HAS CERTIFIED ONLY THREE.
A review using Power Search did not find any other (two offered previously were determined to be the main shade). The online records of The Philatelic Foundation contain only three examples: 1) The example offered here, 2) one with gum, toned and with a reattached perf, and 3) one without gum and sound, last certified in 1984.
With 1997 P.F. certificate. Scott assigns an extremely small premium for this shade, which is strange given its extreme rarity.
